Our History

The history of Grupo Carlos Lyra began in the year of 1951, when the industrialist Carlos Benigno Pereira de Lyra Neto assumed the *Algodoeira Lagense S/A*. The company, headquartered in the municipality of São José da Laje, Alagoas, operated in the business of purchasing, processing, and commercializing cotton, corn, castor beans, and coffee.

But it was in 1965, with the acquisition of *Usina Caeté, Matriz*, in the municipality of São Miguel dos Campos, Alagoas, that the visionary Carlos Lyra began his entrepreneurial trajectory in the sugarcane agro-industry sector, maintaining a tradition of more than 125 years, inherited from his grandfather, Coronel Carlos Lyra and his father, Salvador Lyra, on the lands of Usina Serra Grande.

A history built with great dedication, investments, and socio-environmental responsibility. Currently, the Company has three units producing sugar, ethanol, and bioelectricity, in the states of Alagoas and São Paulo, generating more than 8,000 direct jobs for the country.

*Dr. Carlos Benigno Pereira de Lyra Neto*, born on June 20, 1925, was the son of Salvador Pereira de Lyra and Maria da Conceição Diniz Pereira de Lyra, a traditional family linked to the sugarcane agro-industry. He was the founder of Grupo Carlos Lyra, a conglomerate of companies with operations in the sugar-energy, livestock, textile, fertilizer, broadcasting, and air taxi segments.

Dr. Carlos graduated in Chemical Engineering from the University of Indiana, in the United States (1947/1951). In 1951, he assumed the controlling interest of Algodoeira Lagense, commercializing cotton, castor beans, and tobacco and, in 1965, he acquired Usina Caeté, in São Miguel dos Campos (AL), entering the sugar-energy segment. With unique and visionary characteristics, Dr. Carlos built the Usina Caeté – Marituba Unit, in 1979, located in Igreja Nova and acquired the Usina Caeté – Cachoeira Unit, in 1986, in Maceió, consolidating his position as the largest business group in Alagoas. With the expansion into the Southeast, he built the Usina Caeté – Volta Grande Unit, in 1996, in the municipality of Conceição das Alagoas and assumed, in 2001, the controlling interest of the Usina Caeté – Delta Unit, both located in the Triângulo Mineiro region. Dr. Carlos went further and, in 2007, implemented the Usina Caeté – Paulicéia Unit in Paulicéia, in western São Paulo, becoming one of the most influential industrialists in the Brazilian sugar-energy sector.

He served as a *Senator of the Republic* from 1979 to 1987. In his extensive résumé, Dr. Carlos Lyra was an Advisor to the National Confederation of Industry (CNI), a Member Counselor of the Brazil-United States Business Council, and a Member of the Brazilian Commission at the annual meeting of the IMF Board of Governors – International Monetary Fund, held in Salzburg, Austria.

In 1992, Dr. Carlos Lyra, with his experience in cotton commercialization and familiarity with the textile sector, acquired *Fábrica da Pedra*, located in the municipality of Delmiro Gouveia (AL). The industrialist, who always highlighted the potential of the Alto Sertão region and his admiration for the people of the *sertão* (backlands), modernized the industrial park and conquered the Brazilian and South American markets. It is worth noting that Dr. Carlos was extremely dedicated to Fábrica da Pedra and always made his enthusiasm for the company clear.
